Lake District Snaps

I had a nice break in Windermere recently, and whilst of course I took all the “usual” photos of normal stuff with people in, that’s not what this blog about, so here is a few I took of the more arty-farty type!

Orest head

Moody view from Orrest Head (lots of running training up and down this “hill” over the week!)

Coniston

A beautiful little spot where I could crawl all over the place trying out long exposure

Capri1

Back when cars were great

Engine1

A bit of an engine with some close depth of field – arty or what!

Engine2

Down with the ozone layer!

Oscar

A perfectly in focus Oscar from the Lakeside aquarium. I loved his colours.

… and that’s the lot.  Musically, I have a piano track bubbling away so just need to sort out some time to record it.  Its leading up to the third Bucket of Tentacles EP, which will hopefully include a collaboration piece with some actual singing by Al over Thalassa (posted here previously).

A Glowing City

I took a late Sunday afternoon stroll on Sunday, camera in hand to see what was happening around the City Centre.  I wanted to get some “people” shots, but sometimes its just not happening so I ended up looking out for nice architecture and buildings.  Of which there is loads!  It was a nice evening and once the light dropped a bit there was a nice orange glow everywhere.  A few of my favourites below.  The first one in particular worked really well, and it all got rather exciting as I got kicked off by security so had to rush the shots!

Arndale

Above Shudehill at sunset

Tunnel

Part of the Town Hall extension (I think)

Seat

Such extravagance! A light up seat

Rubbish2

Its not all good.  Scummy back alley.

NQ

The NQ.  My adopted home.  As much as I miss the Black Country, I wouldn’t have it any other way right now 🙂

Uppermill (Saddleworth)

I finally had an opportunity to try a few long exposure shots with water after a short train journey to Uppermill, a nice little village in Saddleworth.  It seems all the rage at the moment and I really like the “other worldly” effect you can achieve.  I’ll be searching for some more locations for better composition, but here are first few attempts….

2014 in review

The geeks at WordPress have created a “Year in Review” type thing for me – click on the picture below to see it.  Thanks to all those who have taken the time to look/listen and comment on my small corner of the internet.  Next year brings more piano practice, hopefully a new EP and surprisingly, a half marathon….. try running that far on 8 tentacles.

Tentacles

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 950 times in 2014. If it were a cable car, it would take about 16 trips to carry that many people.

Some Noise and Blurred Pictures

This post does what it says on the tin – a few snippets of noise and blurred pictures for the Squidren of BoT followers.  First up a short snippet recorded direct onto my Korg Kross, so no mixing or editing, just play for a minute or so.  I’ve started using some of these chord progressions for my next “proper” piece so watch this space.

Idea

Next up is a FreeSynth Improvisation, which means a few mins of random wobs and thrubs from a Volca Keys.  I love the sounds you can extract from these, I just need to do something creative with it 🙂 It can be strangely hypnotic hunched over a little analogue device squeezing out random noises.  Viktoria suggested I was communicating with Whales.  But she might have meant Wales.

As this post is a bit of a mash-up, I also started (yesterday) trying to do some long(ish) exposure photography which seems all the rage at the moment.  Camera in hand I wandered the streets of Manchester looking for things that were moving.  I’m too stingy to buy a tripod so also had to try and find some kind of flat surface to rest the camera on (which severely limited composition), or attempt to stand very still which is pretty much impossible…….  It was a learning experience, but I’m going to upload them anyway!

Buses

Alienesqe – I may admit to using Photoshop a little bit

Buses3

Guess the bus number

tram

Depressing shot, because its on my route to work!

drums

The drummer almost ended up not being in the picture if he’d moved any faster!

Incredibly I’ve also started running, and have set up a page on this blog dedicated to it.  Check it out HERE  I’m currently training for the Stafford Half Marathon which will be a “fun” challenge.
